How AI design applications are changing the government visual design process
In a traffic guidance improvement plan in Taipei, Taiwanese authorities are using AI to help redesign bus routes. AI is really good at sorting out complex information, and can produce and publish in a short period of time, adjust the scale, and analyze the visual movement, so that the first draft of the design looks neat and efficient. However, what really connects this design to people is not the calculation of the machine, but the human mind. The design team spent a lot of time observing user behavior and readjusting the color scheme to avoid the elders not being able to see clearly; Rewrite the introductory sentence so that foreign tourists can understand it at a glance; Even add vignettes that represent the local culture, making this route map not just a practical tool, but also a cityscape that will make you smile. This shift is due to the fact that someone is willing to put themselves in the user’s shoes, rather than just leaving the AI to hand over the standard answers.
AI certainly makes design more efficient, but it doesn’t see the tiny, undocumented needs of the streets. For example, a mother takes her child to catch a bus, hoping to know at a glance how long she will have to wait for the next bus. Or maybe it’s an elderly person with poor eyesight who just wants to find the most intuitive roadmap. These seemingly everyday scenes are the key to the quality of design that AI cannot feel, but deeply affects the quality of design. The role of the designer is never only to make the picture beautiful, but to make everyone visible and taken care of in the design of the city. As the government increasingly introduces AI into public design, we should re-emphasize the value of “people” – because only human experience and warmth can make design truly close to people’s hearts. Therefore, public design is not only a demonstration of efficiency and standards, but also a language of care.
